Hybrid parks – the next big energy trend

The electricity grid is a public resource that should be used sustainably and efficiently for the benefit of all electricity consumers. That is why the next big trend is to maximise the use of grid connections by bringing solar, wind, batteries and direct-line electricity consumers together at a single connection point. One of Sunly’s first hybrid energy parks has been planned in Lääne-Nigula municipality, utilising the latest solar panel technology.

Construction of the Risti solar park will start soon, and the community will receive 0.6% of its operating revenue.

Combined energy production

Traditionally, solar and wind projects have stood apart. However, combining them behind a single connection point enables to harness the best of both sources. Solar panels mostly produce electricity during the sunny season, while wind parks are most productive during the dark and windy season. Working together, the two sources can provide a more stable and consistent energy supply throughout the year.

Batteries for storage

Where should electricity go during the times of no demand? Batteries are increasingly important as they allow excess energy produced when production exceeds consumption to be stored and used when consumption exceeds production. This allows for continuous energy supply even in variable weather conditions, reducing the need for fossil fuels, supporting the transition to renewable energy and boosting energy security.

Direct-line consumers

Hybrid parks not only increase the efficiency of energy production and consumption, but also reduce grid charges for large companies. Consumers connected via a direct line receive energy directly from the point of production, without using the general electricity grid.  This is particularly beneficial for large energy consumers like industrial enterprises and can significantly reduce their costs.  Meanwhile, it contributes to reducing the burden on the public energy grid, cutting infrastructure costs and extending its lifetime.

Advantages of hybrid parks

Integrated solutions are the future of energy and the key to sustainability. They offer not only economic benefits, but also opportunities for a more environmentally friendly and stable energy supply.

Efficient use of grid connections brings a number of benefits:

  1. Reduced costs:  Connecting several energy-generation sources and consumers to a single hub reduces the need for separate connection points and the associated costs.
  1. Less energy losses:  Direct lines supply energy from the point of generation directly to consumers, reducing the losses that would occur when energy is transmitted over long distances.
  1. Lower environmental impact:  Relying on renewable energy and increasing energy efficiency will help reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the fight against climate change.
  1. Grid stability:  Energy-storage batteries and the combination of multiple generation sources help to stabilise the grid and ensure a continuous energy supply.
