Sunly Projects in the Baltics: Spotlight on Valmiera’s 54 MW Park

Sunly Projects in the Baltics: Spotlight on Valmiera’s 54 MW Park
  • Location: near Matīši village (Valmiera municipality), Latvia
  • Size: 54 MW
  • Type of production: Hybrid

At Sunly, we are committed to accelerating the renewable energy transition in the Baltic States and Poland. To provide more insight into our work, we are launching a new series showcasing our projects — from those in early development to those under construction and already operational.

The first project in our spotlight is the Valmiera Solar Park, a 54 MW hybrid energy project located near Matīši village in Latvia’s Valmiera Municipality. From the very beginning, the park has been planned as a hybrid project, combining solar power with additional technologies to enhance efficiency and grid stability.

Why do we develop our projects as hybrid?

Hybrid parks maximise the use of grid connections by bringing solar, wind, batteries and direct-line electricity consumers together at a single connection point. Hybrid park raises capacity factor of this production to 50%, compared to a case of solar only 15% or wind 30%. Integrated solutions are the future of energy and the key to sustainability. They offer not only economic benefits, but also opportunities for a more environmentally friendly and stable energy supply.

Progress of Valmiera Solar park

Construction for the solar park began in late 2024 and is progressing steadily, with the goal of becoming fully operational in early 2026. In parallel, the development of a small wind turbine project is underway — currently in the local spatial planning process. From the start, the connection point has been designed to accommodate multiple technologies. By integrating several energy sources at a single grid access point, connection costs are reduced for both producers and consumers. In the future, such costs could make up more than half of total energy expenses. From an energy security perspective, this approach helps ensure a more balanced and stable energy supply.

But Sunly’s work is not only about building infrastructure — community involvement is a key part of our mission. So far, we’ve supported local football and hockey tournaments, local seniors, and this spring and autumn, we’re planning to organise a tree-planting activity in the park area — a symbolic and lasting gesture of our collaboration with the community.
